Our Piano Curriculum
At Erica Phung's Piano Studio, our standard piano curriculum includes Dr. Helen Marlais' Succeeding at the Piano and Succeeding with the Masters method books as a foundation for beginner and intermediate students, with additional supplemental materials based on the students' individual needs. Dr. Marlais' curriculum provides students with a strong foundation to excel at the advanced level and beyond by emphasizing body-friendly technique and musicality from the very beginning. The curriculum includes rhythm and note reading, technique, musicality/artistry, practice strategies, sight reading, music theory, ear training, music history, and composition.
Curriculums for young beginners are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
At the advanced and professional levels, students will study pieces and etudes from the standard repertoire and beyond, music theory, ear training, music history, composition, and sight reading. The curriculum prepares students to continue musical studies at the collegiate level, if they so choose.
All students will participate in semester-end jury exams, which will assess student progress in performance, sight reading, theory, ear training, and/or music history.
We assess transfer student curriculums on a case-by-case basis. Young beginner and intermediate students will either be migrated into Dr. Marlais' curriculum or continue the method they were previously using at the teacher's discretion.
